In the Beginning looks backwards in time, imagining what it was like to still be in the womb, on the precipice of being born into the world.
I imagine that, whilst in utero, teeny tiny humans feel a strong connection to the expansive universe and galaxies beyond their own little protective bubble, before fully incarnating into the terrestrial plane and forgetting that we all came from the stars. Perhaps. Of course with our collective penchant for amnesia, it’s all conjecture…
At any rate, for me this painting represents those precious in-between states – in-between heaven and Earth, the womb and the outside world, the red earth and the swirling stars.
A viewer pointed out the pomegranate-like nature of the abstract shapes, which is interesting because pomegranates are often invoked as a symbol of fertility, what with their abundance of luscious, pearlescent, ruby red seeds.
